Set down a long tunnel within the depths of the fortress of Pax Tharkas is the Chamber of the Chain. This room is a broad circular chamber that contains the controls for the defense mechanism of Pax Tharkas. A massive chain resides in the centre of the room, which itself is wrapped around a vast wooden cogwheel. Each spoke of the cogwheel is as wide as a huge tree trunk. The chain runs over the cogwheel, across the ceiling and vanishes into a tunnel, where it drops into a deep pit. The primary chain has smaller chains that offshoot from it, each of them with a giant boulder tied to their ends. When the defense mechanism is released, the boulders are released from the chains and can seal the gates of Pax Tharkas from intruders.
