While gold and silver coins were the norm during the Age of Might, during the First Cataclysm soft metals were deemed to be not as valuable due to their rather limited usage, and were instead deemed to be ornamental at best. It was at this time that the steel system was implemented.

The value of coins is in the following order: platinum, steel, iron/bronze, silver, gold and finally copper.

Coin Copper Gold Silver Iron/Bronze Steel Platinum
Copper (cp) 1 2/5 1/5 1/50 1/100 1/500
Gold (gp) 2 1/2 1 1/2 1/20 1/40 1/200
Silver (sp) 5 2 1 1/10 1/20 1/100
Iron/Bronze (ip/bp) 50 20 10 1 1/2 1/10
Steel (stl) 100 40 20 2 1 1/5
Platinum (pp) 500 200 100 10 5 1

There is no definitive steel standard, so goods that can be used tend to be worth more than simply gold or steel, and while it might vary from government to government, steel still tends to be valued higher than gold. Steel should be considered the standard currency, having the equivalent of 1 gold piece in other settings.
