Dark Elves are Elves that have been banished from elven society for a crime that they have committed. Some have been found to have turned from the Gods of Good. This could be a wizard who chose the Red Robes, or Black Robes. Others may have done nothing more than fall in love with one who was above their station in society. These elves have been "cast from the light", and are either shunned, or hunted down by their fellow elves.

Sometimes in Dragonlance novels the name "Drow" pops up to refer to a dark elf. This is a D&D term and not generally accepted on Krynn.
