- p. 60 - “Kindling” by Jean Rabe, illustrated by Terry Dykstra
This is the first of the Dragonlance: Tales of the Fifth Age stories published in Dragon Magazine. This story starts with a Daemon Warrior plotting to bring the recent war back to the peoples of Ansalon. Then on to a Black Dragon who is hunting deer in the forests of Misty Isle, then becomes hunted by a giant female Red Dragon who finally ends his life. After that the big Red burns the old forest of the isle killing and eating any animal she finds. She seems confused that the black lizard talked until she realizes that he was a young Black. But even more, she was confused that it had called her Takhisis, an unknown name to her. While pondering the differences of this new place, mostly the smallness of it, the Daemon Warrior stops her from returning home. This Dragon is named Malystryx, who did not like the brutish Reds of her home, but now realizes that she could be a goddess in this new world. She turns upon the Daemon Warrior and eats him, then heads toward the Dairly Plains to start her rule.
This story is an excerpt from the novel The Dawning of a New Age (Chapter 6).
