Esme was a human woman from Fangoth in Lemish who lived around the time of the War of the Lance. She was a tall, slim woman with curly golden-red hair. She was always impeccably dressed when not in her formal wizard robes. She regularly wore a silver armband, given to her by Justarius, that shocked and knocked down anyone who touched her.

Early Life[]

Esme was born to a noble family in Fangoth and her father was a Wizard of High Sorcery. Her father tried to train each of her brothers in magic and when they rejected it he disowned them. Having run out of male heirs, he began training Esme, though he thought women were incapable of passing the Test of High Sorcery. Esme left and made it to the Tower of Wayreth on her own, where she chose the Order of the Red Robes and was apprenticed to Justarius.

Apprenticeship[]

Esme excelled as one of Justarius's apprentices in Palanthas. Toward the end of her apprenticeship, Justarius took on Guerrand DiThon as a junior apprentice. At the same time, she met Lyim Rhistadt who had been traveling with Guerrand. She maintained a friendship with both and would occasionally go out on the town with either of them.

When Guerrand became convinced that someone was trying to kill him, she helped investigate the matter. She went with him to break into the villa of the Master of the Red Robes, Belize. In the process, she fell through a trap door and broke her leg. They did find evidence that Belize was performing renegade magic. When Justarius discovered what they had done, he gave Esme a potion to fix her leg and informed both apprentices that he would have to report them to the Conclave of Wizards.

Believing her career as a wizard was over, she tricked Guerrand and returned to the villa on her own to finish the matter. She was captured by Belize and taken to Stonecliff where he attempted to open a gate to the Lost Citadel. Guerrand and Lyim intervened and the group stoped Belize. Justarius admitted his mistake and declared that Esme and Guerrand have completed their apprenticeships and are ready to take the Test of High Sorcery.

Career[]

Due to their bravery in stopping Belize, Esme and Guerrand are asked to join the Conclave immediately after taking their Tests. The gods of magic demand that better precautions be made to guard the Lost Citadel. Over the next year, the Conclave builds Bastion, a fortress to block the entrance to the Lost Citadel. After they finish creating it the three Masters of the Orders finish the magic, place the fortress in a demiplane, and appoint a sentinel from each order to guard it.

Esme and Guerrand, who had been romantically involved for a while, step down from their positions on the Conclave and travel. They settle in a small village on the New Sea and work at restoring and building up the town. After a few years, Esme gets word that her father is dying, she decides to go home and mitigate the damage. Guerrand decides to stay. Esme wanted to confront her past and show the world that all wizards were not as bad as her father. She believed that Guerrand had found a comfortable place to hide from his past and his destiny. They do not see each other again.

Esme tended to her father but he died soon after her arrival. She inherited his manor, which she repaired and redecorated. She spent the following years restoring the region's faith in magic. It is unknown how she interacted with the hobgoblins who ruled Fangoth at that time, or if she played a role in events in Fangoth over the following years.
