Maul (? AC - ? AC) was a member of the bandit troop known as the Highland Rangers. He was a man with a poor sense of humor, who threatened captive women to marry him or be sold into slavery.
In 353 AC, Maul and the Highland Rangers attacked the unprotected camp of Nearra, Elidor, Sindri Suncatcher, and Catriona, taking them prisoner. Davyn, the leader of the group and his ally, Set-ai attacked the Highland Rangers, trying to free their captured party. During the fight, Maul watched as his fellow Highland Ranger, Dee, was struck in the back with an arrow and killed by the young ranger Davyn.
Set-ai let Maul and the Highland Rangers live but stripped them of everything but light cloaks, knives, and one horse. As Maul rode away, he was embarrassed and frustrated. He swore revenge on Davyn and Set-ai for embarrassing the Highland Rangers.
The frustrated Maul went back to camp and collected 6 men and went after Davyn and his companions. They captured Nearra and her companions just as the group was leaving the village of Potter's Mill. That night, tragedy befell the Highland Rangers. The mystical pet monster of Maddoc known as the Beast, cut through their camp and killed 3 Highland Rangers, Sam, Grist, and Hithar, within seconds. The young heroes escaped their captivity and the rest of the Highland Rangers, including Maul, escaped with their lives into the woods.
