Dragonlance Wiki

The Portals to the Abyss were portals that originally intended to be a means to travel between the Towers of High Sorcery.

Description[]

All of the portals were identical, 8 feet in height, 6 feet in width, five dragons heads, two dragon heads on one side three on the other, of each of the Chromatic Dragon coloring surrounding a piece of glass that looks into unfathomable darkness, and the portal is on a sort of raised dais. When the magic is invoked on the portal, the actual portal into the Abyss can appear much larger. The location of each dragon head is as follows: red on the lower left, green above the red, white at the top of the portal, blue in the upper right, and the black at the lower right.

Activation[]

In order to activate a portal, a Cleric of good acts as a channel that calls upon the gods of Good, while the Black Robe casts the spell to open the portal. If during the process there is any hesitation or word spoken incorrectly, the defensive spells that are on the portals are triggered, resulting in a massive explosion for a one-mile radius. The cleric and mage are utterly destroyed in the resulting explosion and earthquake.

The spell to open the portal goes:

  • To the Black Dragon head: From darkness to darkness, my voice echoes in the emptiness
  • To the White Dragon head: From this world to the next, my voice cries with life
  • To the Red Dragon head: From darkness to darkness, I shout. Beneath my feet, all is made firm
  • To the Blue Dragon head: Time that flows, hold in your course
  • To the Green Dragon head: Because by fate even the gods are cast down, weep ye all with me

Histories of the Five Portals[]

Originally created as a means for mages to travel between towers and the Outer Planes. Takhisis corrupted them during the creation process to allow herself five different passages onto the Material Plane from the Abyss. The mages, not able to destroy the powerful artifacts, instead made them so that it would take a Black Robe and a cleric of Good working together to open the portal never thinking this would ever happen.

During the Third Dragon War, a wizard of the Black Robes was somehow able to open one of the portals. This allowed for Takhisis to enter Krynn and she assisted her troops in attempting to conquer all of Ansalon.

Daltigoth Portal[]

The portal that was housed in the Tower of High Sorcery at Daltigoth was believed destroyed during the Lost Battles with the Istar Empire in 19 PC.

Istar Portal[]

The portal that was housed in the Tower of High Sorcery at Istar was removed from the grasp of the Kingpriest during the Lost Battles with the Istar Empire in 19 PC. Its current location is unknown and thought to be lost.

Losarcum Portal[]

The portal that was housed in the Tower of High Sorcery at Losarcum was believed destroyed during the Lost Battles with the Istar Empire in 19 PC. This portal may not have been destroyed. In 346 AC Tasslehoff Burrfoot and his uncle Trapspringer Furrfoot entered a portal in the Ruins. It teleported them to Gelfigburg, a type of plane of the Abyss that is all candy for the kender who had fallen into the portal. Takhisis attempted to leave out of the portal when all the kender returned to the Material Plane.

Palanthas Portal[]

The portal that was housed in the Tower of High Sorcery at Palanthas was moved at the end of the Lost Battles with the Istar Empire in 19 PC, from Palanthas to the Fortress of Zhaman. During the Dwarfgate War, Fistandantilus (also Raistlin Majere) attempted to enter the Abyss through this portal. A gnome’s magical device interrupted the spell and destroyed the surrounding lands and the fortress itself. Somehow the portal was sent back to the Tower in Palanthas. It currently resides in Raistlin’s laboratory in the Tower in Nightlund.

Wayreth Portal[]

The portal that was housed in the Tower of High Sorcery at Wayreth has been lost also. The portal was there in 356 AC, but what became of it after that date is unknown.
