Renegade Wizards is a fantasy novel by Lucien Soulban. It is the third book in The Anvil of Time series.
The book follows the young wizards Par-Salian, Ladonna, and Tythonnia as they infiltrate a group of renegade wizards who have grown too large to ignore.
Chronology & Geography[]
The story takes place over a few months, many decades before the War of the Lance. Justarius has just passed the Test of High Sorcery. Astathan of Qualinost the White is the Highmage. Reginald Diremore the Black and Yasmine of the Delving the Red are the heads of the other orders. The year is not specified, but events in the story indicate it could be as early as 326 AC or as late as 337 AC. There is an epilogue in 346 AC.
The action begins in the Darkwoods of Lemish, in Solanthus, and in the wilderness of the Vingaard Mountains west of the Bay of Branchala. The wizards trek across Solamnia, past the High Clerist's Tower, and into Palanthas. The wizards sail up the coast and go into the foothills of the Vingaard Mountains. They teleport to the Tower of Wayreth and back. They end up in Palanthas and Wayreth.

Plot Summary[]
The white wizard Pecas searched is library for a tome requested by the Duke of Elmwood in Lemish. The books are gone and he realized his apprentice Virgil stole them. Renegade hunters Dumas, Hort, and Thoma catch Virgil on his way to Caermish but the books are already gone. The Journeyman is spotted by the hunters and moves on to Solanthus.
At the Three Eyes Academy in Solanthus, the Wizard's Conclave and many other prominent wizards gather for Virgil's trial. Tythonnia sits with her mentor, feeling intimidated and out classed. She is worried about her cousin Justarius who was recently mangled by the Test of High Sorcery. The masters of the three orders take the stage and the hunters bring Virgil before them. Berthal, a renegade red robe, speaks through Virgil and chastises the orders. They dispel the magic and have Virgil speak for himself in trial.
Tythonnia, Par-Salian, and Ladonna are held aside during the final deliberations. Ladonna teases Tythonnia over her sexual interest in women. Tythonnia remembers her parents disappointment in her sexuality and how she has hid it. They listen in on part of the deliberations and hear that Pecas wants Virgil executed. Later, they are called one by one before Highmage Astathan and he casts a minor version of the Test of High Sorcery on them. They all pass. Astathan meets with them together and asks them to go undercover and infiltrate a group of renegade wizards near Palanthas led by Berthal. Berthal is practicing Wyldling magic and has gathered a large group of followers. Astathan asks them to capture Berthal and bring him to trial.
Par-Salian meets with Astathan who tells him of the importance of the mission to the orders and how he must grow as a leader. Ladonna leads with the head of the black robes Reginald Diremore. He asks her to retrieve three specific stolen books and to seduce Par-Salian as he rises to power. She refuses the seduction mission angrily. Tythonnia meets with the head of the red robes Yasmine of the Delving and her paramour Belize. Yasmine seems ill. Belize orders her to retrieve the books stolen from the black robes. She has to argue to even find out which specific books, but Yasmine tells her. Astathan recognizes that The Journeyman is posing as one of his servants, saying he has met him multiple times. He asks The Journeyman to break his rules and help the wizards on their quest.
In the Vingaard mountains, Berthal and Kinsley plan to move their people down from the mountains to a new spot. The books Kinsley got from Virgil were not helpful, but the three black mage tomes were. Berthal insists their group is a community and not an army. He plans to pull in more favors from spies. He sends Kinsley back into Palanthas.
Astathan gives Tythonnia, Par-Salian, and Ladonna the information he knows. They ride off the main road through the Plains of Solamnia.
Belize summons Dumas and orders her to kill the three wizards as renegades. Dumas knows somethings wrong since the order is strange and did not come from Astathan. Belize paralyzes her and reveals that he helped construct the tome she wears. He uses the tomes magic to dominate her mind and send her on the mission.
Tythonnia leads the way across the countryside. She grew up on a farm and is comfortable with it. Ladonna grew up in Palanthas and hates it, and hates not being in charge. Par-Salian struggles to keep them from fighting. The Journeyman follows them. They find a small village near Hartford. The buildings are burned and everyone is dead. They investigate and are attacked by dozens of rag dolls. Tythonnia is overwhelmed and resorts to using the Wyldling magic she learned from her first mentor. They battle their way out, regroup, and camp. Par-Salian insists they move on instead of trying to sort the situation out. Ladonna sneaks away in the night to find the source. She finds the rag dolls taking care of a corpse as though it were alive. She burns the whole place down. Tythonnia is away when she returns and they argue. The hunters find the village later and conclude that the three wizards were responsible.
The wizards reach the High Clerist's Tower and split up for a couple hours to get a break from each other. Par-Salian is shocked to see that the Knights of Solamnia are encouraging bribes from the merchants and pilgrims passing through. The Journeyman follows Tythonnia. Par-Salian goes to a makeshift pub to get a meal. The proprietors realize he matches the description of a wanted man and send for the hunters. Ladonna goes to the market looking for anything with unrecognized magic. She finds a fading toy soldier. Then she sees Dumas searching the crowd and follows her. Tythonnia visits the Vagros caravan and trades a hand mirror to see the wisewoman of the caravan. Par-Salian tries to pay and leave but the proprieter stops him. He realizes what is going on, casts hold person, and leaves. He is immediately spotted and casts darkness to escape. Ladonna follows him.
Tythonnia has her fortune read by Grandmother Yassa. Yassa encourages her to follow her heart and not hide behind the arguments of people she respects. The caravan gets word of the hunters and kicks Tythonnia out. Tythonnia rescues Ladonna. They regroup and flee into the High Clerist's Tower. They scare off some guards and Ladonna magics the lock to get inside. Ladonna wants to explore but Par-Salian keeps them focused on finding the exit. Once they find it, they rest and prepare to leave at night. Ladonna and Tythonnia start to get along and talk about trading spells. Invisibly, they sneak out a door, past guards, and summon horses to ride away. The Journeyman follows them. The guards call for the hunters but it's too late. However the hunter Thoma was waiting ahead for the wizards to pass, spots them, and follows. Thoma begins to question his mission.
Berthal reaches out to four of his spies. Only one is in a position to help. Mariyah, a black robe acolyte, drugs her mentor and steals his box containing the Key to Gadrella's tomb in the Tower of Wayreth. She's glad to finally leave the lecherous old man and the Order.
The Vagros caravan picks up Tythonnia, Par-Salian, and Ladonna and smuggles them into Palanthas. The caravan stops for a long stay at the Wanderer's Welcome, and inn run by family of the Vagros. Thoma saw them join the caravan. He rejoins with Hort and Dumas and they enter the city. Thoma tells Hort about his doubts. Ladonna sneaks away and wanders the city. She thinks about the good and bad times she had in the thieves guild. She finds an urchin child who she thinks is close with the guild and gives him her toy soldier, asking for sanctuary. They boy runs off and reports her as she intended. Tythonnia gets relationship advice from Grandmother Yassa's wife.
Ladonna takes the lead since she is familiar with the city. They can't figure out why the hunters are after them. They agree to be magical thieves to get the attention of Berthal's lieutenant. They start out with Ladonna building up their courage with basic shoplifting in the open air Labyrinth market. After a few days, Ladonna tests Tythonnia by yelling "thief!" as Tythonnia is getting away. Tythonnia freezes but Par-Salian rescues her. Back at the inn, Ladonna defends her decision and Tythonnia punches her. The boy Ladonna gave the toy to brings Sutler to the inn and he recognizes Ladonna.
Over the rest of the week, they break into a barter store and a jewelry store, both protected by magic. Ladonna pitches the idea of doing a daylight robbery to get more attention but it's rejected. The Vagros caravan leaves and they stay at the inn. They return to the inn at night and are ambushed by Sutler and four thieves. He says he's going to kill Ladonna for abandoning the guild, and for stealing from guild protected shops. Par-Salian and Tythonnia are stunned to realize they are part of Ladonna's revenge plot. Ladonna calls him out as a child molester and attacks. They start to lose and Tythonnia makes everyone invisible. As the thieves reveal themselves, they pick them off, but Sutler stabs Ladonna in both kidneys. Tythonnia kills him with a Phantasmal Killer. As Ladonna bleeds to death, they yell for help, but the inn door is locked. The Journeyman gives the innkeepers a potion of healing and scares them into giving it to Ladonna. They steal horses and invisibly sneak across the city to Smith's Alley.
The boy and another guild member, Keanan, watched the whole fight. They boy follows them and then returns. They give their information to the hunters for a fee. The boy is honored with the name Lucky Leppomanto. The wizards find Rosie, a blacksmith who helped raise Ladonna. She takes them in while Ladonna recovers. Berthal and Kinsley meet in Palanthas. Kinsley tells him about the incident and Berthal immediately knows it's a trap. Berthal tells Kinsley to care for Mariyah when she arrives and to investigate the three wizards.
Par-Salian spends a few days taking care of Ladonna. Par-Salian and Tythonnia help Rosie during the day. Tythonnia goes out shopping for Rosie and while waiting is contacted by Thoma. She tells him the real story and they agree to meet in person. Kinsley is in the neighborhood buying information from barkeeps. The Journeyman gets his attention by stealing a purse with magic and Kinsley asks him to join the renegades. Tythonnia and Thoma meet and Thoma decides to confront Dumas. Before they can leave, Dumas attacks, setting the neighborhood on fire and killing Thoma. Tythonnia escapes back to Rosie's smithy. Dumas tells Hort that the wizards killed Thoma and they chase. Hort finds them, blind and deafens them, and proceeds to beat them to death. Kinsley knocks out Hort and gets them to safety. They take a coach across the city to the docks and hide in a keelboat captained by a dwarf. That night Berthal and Kinsley arrive. Berthal pretends to be a guide named "Raff."
In Abrasma Keep, Yasmine of the Delving is near death. Belize goes to meet her. He gloats about how he as been slowly poisoning her so he can become the head of the order. Then he kills her.
The wizards, Kinsley, and Berthal sail up the coast. They depart without Kinsley into the Vingaard foothills. Ladonna and Tythonnia figure out quickly that he is really Berthal. They wander for a week while Berthal interviews them. Tythonnia opens up to Berthal about her insecurities and the Test. Berthal takes them to the camp after that. Kinsley and Mariyah greet them. The Journeyman watches from the camp, which has grown to over a hundred people, mostly families. Tythonnia starts hunting for the community. Par-Salian teaches the children. Ladonna does mending. They are not allowed to use magic in the camp to avoid riling up the children.
After a few days, Ladonna gets in an argument with Mariyah at the fire and storms off. Berthal steps in to calm things down. Ladonna uses the distraction to search Berthal's tent but doesn't find the books. She sneaks off with Par-Salian for sex. Tythonnia and Berthal begin going on private walks. Berthal tells the tale of his apprentice Joss who was killed by the Test. Berthal and Kinsley discuss what to do. They know all three are spies. They decide that they can sway Tythonnia to their side but should abandon Par-Salian and Ladonna.
Dumas and Hort find the dwarf captain and bribe him to drop them off where he dropped off the renegades.
The camp decides to move, since game is getting scarce. Tythonnia and Berthal begin a romance, spending every evening together. The wizards decide it's time to leave but want to recover the spellbooks. Ladonna asks Tythonnia to search him when he's passed out. She angrily agrees. When it comes time, she makes a deal with Berthal instead. She gets the three books and the wizards teleport back Wayreth. Dumas and Hort see the escape. Dumas goes to get mercenaries from Palanthas and Hort follows the camp.
Arianna, Ladonna's mentor, greets them. Astathan debriefs them and makes a plan to clean up the mess and recall Dumas and Hort. Ladonna reports to Reginald Diremore. He is furious she only retrieved one book. She claims credit for seducing Par-Salian as a political move. It makes her ill and she does not admit to him that she did it because she has feelings for Par-Salian. Par-Salian feels like a failure for empathizing with the renegade but Astathan reassures him that he did everything right, including doubting the Orders. Tythonnia reports to Belize, who is furious that she only recovered one book. She asks for two days to recover the others and Belize reluctantly agrees.
Tythonnia sneaks into the crypts and finds the crypt of Gadrella of Tarsis. She uses the key Berthal gave her to open it. She places the key in Gadrella's mouth and a book appears. Ladonna arrives and tries to warn Tythonnia that the book is a trap, but Tythonnia drinks a teleportation potion and arrives at the camp. Ladonna rushes to Par-Salian and they prepare to return, then teleport to the previous location of the camp. Berthal explains that the book has a ritual to open a demiplane where the renegades can hide while they grow. They begin preparations for the ritual. Tythonnia breaks up with Berthal; He's proud of her for being honest with herself. Par-Salian and Ladonna follow the arcane marks left by Hort and find the camp after a few days. Dumas and the mercenaries arrive, planning to attack during the ritual. The Journeyman finds a place far a way to watch the event.
The renegade families are sent to a safe distance before the ritual. Berthal, Tythonnia, Mariyah, Kinsley, and another sorcerer perform the ritual. They are quickly frozen in place and a portal opens to an abyssal realm. Blight shades pour through the opening and attack everyone else. Dumas attacks, the mercenaries retreat in fear, and Hort goes to help Dumas. Ladonna sends Par-Salian to protect the families and frees Tythonnia, breaking the circle. Dumas cuts her way through to Berthal and stabs him multiple times in the gut. Par-Salian tries desperately to defend the families but all of them are killed except one boy.
The portal begins to close, sucking every living and dead thing up into the air and through it. Dumas turns on Ladonna but Tythonnia casts phantasmal killer. Dumas realizes everything she has done under mind control and dies from the terror of the spell. With the last of his strength, Berthal uses his staff to create a teleportation circle, then he is sucked through the portal. Tythonnia tries to go after him but Mariyah and Ladonna drag her back and all three teleport away. Par-Salian sees the blink of the teleport spell and teleports away with the sole surviving child.
In Palanthas, Ladonna explains that the book was a trap set by the black robe wizards after the key was stolen by Mariyah. They are stunned and furious. Ladonna promises to say they were killed in the battle, and to hunt them down if they don't stay hidden. Par-Salian leaves the boy with his aunt and the meets with Astathan. Astathan orders the entire incident covered up, deferring to the black and red robes on the actions taken. He councils Par-Salian that he must be ready for darker times than this that are coming.
Eight or Nine years later, Palanthas is under quarantine from the medusa plague. Ladonna finds Rosie's old shop. Tythonnia and Mariyah live there and have converted it to a school. Rosie died a few years before. Ladonna is there with her newborn baby daughter Kira. She has told people that the baby is Arianna's and has hidden her from Par-Salian who is the father. Tythonnia and Berthal's son, also named Berthal, interrupts them. Mariyah takes him upstairs. Ladonna explains that Belize was a renegade and recently killed; He was controlling Dumas. Wyldling magic and the Vagros are almost entirely gone. Ladonna asks Tythonnia to adopt Kira, to protect her from Ladonna's dangerous life. Tythonnia agrees. Ladonna leaves Palanthas for the last time. Tythonnia teaches her son Wyldling magic and thinks some day Kira will learn. She looks forward to a day, probably after her time, when the Orders face a reckoning and Berthal is remembered as a hero.
Importance to Dragonlance[]
The story debates the nature, necessity, and intent of the Test of High Sorcery. It shows the wild sorcery used in Ansalon before the Chaos War. It shows how Astathan rebuilt the Orders of High Sorcery after the Cataclysm and how they dealt with the rise of renegade wizards in the Age of Despair. It details how Par-Salian and Ladonna first met and fell in love.

Kender Tales[]
The timing of the story is unclear. The Epilogue is during the Medusa Plague of 346 AC and the epilogue is eight or nine years after the end of the tale. The beginning of the tale is soon after Justarius's Test of High Sorcery while he is recovering. The date of that test is unknown but to align with the epilogue, Justarius would have taken the test when he was thirty one. Similarly, Par-Salian is belived to be born in 286 AC and is descibed as being in his thirties in the story. That would set the tale even earlier.
This story details wizards passing through the High Clerist's Tower. They sneak into the lower levels to pass through, knowing that the knights will not follow them. Most sources say that no one ever entered the High Clerist's Tower between the Cataclysm and the War of the Lance.
