Dragonlance Wiki

A Spirit Pole is the a large wooden pole usually made from an ancient oak that normally stands in the north end of Qué-Nal and Wemitowuk villages. This is a tradition that the Qué-Nal adopted from the Wemitowuk. The pole is carved with four oversized faces looking towards each cardinal direction. Each face is painted red on the left half and black on the right half.

The native people believe that the pole serves as the home for spirits watching over the village. Also, they believe that the pole will carry the prayers of the Shamans of the village to the Gods. The Wemitowuk say the spirit poles warned them about the Cataclysm, so that they would not drown in the forming of the New Sea. Tribal spiritualists and necromancers tend to work around the spirit poles. Mystics from the Citadel of Light have investigated the poles and have not found any inherit magic in them.

There is one special spirit pole. It is the pole for the Qué-Nal village of Qué-Theh. It does not stand by the village but two hundred yards away in Nelakne's Glade. The pole is not dead wood but the living tree of the Dryad, Nelakne.

Kender Tales[]

One source listed Nelakne's Glade as being in the northern forests of Schallsea, but since Qué-Theh is in the southeastern part of the island this is an error.
