Within the larger school of Conjuration magic is the subschool of Summoning. This subschool specializes in spells that instantly brings creatures or objects to the spell caster's vicinity. If a summoning spell is ended, the creature/object is instantly sent back to its original location. A "summoned" creature vanishes and slowly reforms if it is slain, unlike creatures brought by a spell from the Calling subschool.
The summoning subschool is an invention of the "3.0" edition of the Dragonlance game (though the conjuration school was known as conjuration/summoning for a time, and sorcerers used to cast spells from a "summoning" sphere of sorcery).
