The Temple of the Heart in Sanction is located on a hill in the northwestern section of the city, along the inside of the city wall at the foot of Mount Grishnor. This temple is considered the oldest structure in all of Sanction, and is a small white marble building with a pitched roof. It was the smallest of the three temples of Sanction, the other two being the Temple of Duerghast and Temple of Luerkhisis. The rumor behind its building is that a Kingpriest washed up on the shore of Sanction, and he had the temple built to the Gods of Light. This used to be the Temple of Huerzyd, prior to the Age of Mortals.
The central altar room was surrounded by sleeping, eating, and study quarters for the monks, clerics, and later mystics. In the altar room was six granite statues to the true gods of good. A statue of Paladine sits in the center with Mishakal at his side. The Shadowpeople, who used the temple as a hiding place for many years, carved a lower level. There is a set of stairs from the upper level to the lower level that could have been built to reach the tunnels below. There are a total of twelve chambers on the lower level, and tunnels that lead off into all different parts of the city. The first room can be closed off from the other rooms by traps that block the entrance and exit with huge stone doors.
History[]
The actual temple was built before the Cataclysm, but by who has been lost to time. Following the Cataclysm, the temple was abandoned even though not a single brick fell from it or was touched. People left the temple though since they felt the spirit of the founding Kingpriest stayed with the temple. Even when the Dragonarmies took over the city, they avoided setting foot on the temple's grounds.
The temple remained abandoned until after the Chaos War. During the Age of Mortals, Lord Hogan Bight tamed the lava flows and started making the city of Sanction prosperous. The Citadel of Light mystics came to Sanction and asked Lord Bight if they could restore the temple, and be allowed to go out among the people and help them with their healing power. Lord Bight agreed, and temple flourished.
During the War of Souls, the city of Sanction fell to the armies led by Mina. She kicked the citadel mystics out of the temple, and renamed it the Temple of the One God. The mystics were imprisoned in their own cells, and Mina incinerated the temple roof. The skull totems of Beryl, Khellendros, Malys, and the rest of the dragons were brought to the temple and heaped in the altar room.
Eventually, the spirit of Palin Majere and the silver dragon Mirror were able to destroy the skulls, which caused a massive explosion. This devastated the altar room of the temple. The temple has remained empty since the war, with a taint lingering over the temple of death and evil. The citadel mystics have tried, but as of yet been unsuccessful in cleansing it.
