Plot summary[]
The book begins with Caitiff and Emperor Emann choosing a new bride for him. The spell settles on Phrygia, which the Emperor is mad about as she was too plump. But Caitiff said that when she grew older she would have a sharp mind and a good match for the Emperor.
A young Vinas and his childhood friend, Half-Elf Luccia, decided they wanted to join the Black Guard. But being of noble birth, Vinas was not allowed to be a general soldier. He would become an officer. So they hid their upbringing the best they could. The officer in charge told them to climb to the top of a pole and they would be in. As they were coming back down, the shirt they were using broke and they fell. Luccia landed safely but Vinas was impaled.
Vinas awoke to his father, Adrenas, telling him he could not join the Black Guard. Instead he would become an officer, and after a few years of training he was in charge of his own company. They ended up going to Solanthus, and Vinas did not agree with how the peasants there were starving. He and a few of his men stole supplies to give to them, but an officer of the Empire was killed and Vinas took the guilt. Due to his father, he was allowed not to be killed and joined the priesthood.
He learned about Paladine, and was present when the Emperor got wed. His father and him stopped an assassination attempt on the Emperor, but Adrenas lost his life in the process. For their help, Vinas was allowed to join back up with the military as an officer. He quickly became the best officer the Empire had to offer. When Vingaard rebelled again, he was put in charge of three armies to reign them in.
After some battles, he arrived at Vingaard and laid siege. He ended up choosing to listen to the King there talk, and then was horrified when he took his own life. For the next year, he thought on those words, and pretended to execute people in Vingaard at the behest of the Emperor. He then saw the error of his ways and that of the Empire and decided to pick up the rebellion.
The Rose Rebellion took place over almost the next decade, and the people flocked to his banner. After the Siege at Daltigoth, the Emperor sued for peace. Allowing for the new nation of Solamnia to form. About 15 years later, Vinas went on a pilgrimage to find honor that he could pass on to his son. There he got a vision from Paladine on a new order that he would name the Knights of Solamnia.
